PRINCE OF WALES HOTEL
| Description: |
Although we typically recommend several properties in a given area, this is our only true recommendation in Southport. Why is that? Because, when compared to any others based on price and quality, there is no true comparison. Located in the heart of this beautiful seaside community, it is within a twenty-minute drive of every recommended course in the area. Lytham to one side, Liverpool and Formby to the other, with Birkdale right up the street. The Prince of Wales is easily the most famous hotel in all of Southport, and in our minds the very best. |
| Golf Course Name: |
Royal Lytham & St. Annes |
| Description: |
Royal Lytham & St. Annes, site of the 2001 British Open Championship, is perhaps the most unique links course in the world. The first thing you notice upon approaching its famous clubhouse is that the course lies some distance from the sea. The quality of the course, however, does not suffer from its lack of water. Jack Nicklaus once described the 468 yard #15 as the hardest hole he ever played, while the back nine is generally considered, along with that at Royal Troon, as the toughest in all of Open competition. |

| Golf Course Name: |
Royal Liverpool |
| Description: |
We realize that trying to define the "feel" of a club is a rather subjective thing, but if we had to choose one course that really takes a guest back in time, we would likely choose Royal Liverpool (along with Royal Aberdeen in Scotland). This legendary course has hosted ten British Open championships, and was recently named as the 2004 host (the first time since 1967). Bobby Jones won the second leg of his Grand Slam here in 1930, and the Walker Cup was held here in 1983. Although most guests feel the need to stay to the north in Scotland, we highly recommend a few days playing the courses of England. |

| Golf Course Name: |
Royal Birkdale |
| Description: |
No British club has held more major events in the last 30 years than Royal Birkdale, which obviously speaks to its character as a course and as a host. In a similar fashion as Royal Troon, Royal Birkdale lends a sense of formality to the game for guests not used to the tradition often recognized by the legendary clubs of Great Britain. Among the Open champions this course has crowned are Palmer, Trevino, Watson and Miller. We say this with every course in the area, but you simply can not go wrong making this region your primary destination. |

Outskirts of Southport |
| Golf Course Name: |
Formby |
| Description: |
Often overlooked due to its proximity to the "Big 3" (Liverpool, Lytham and Birkdale), Formby claims a lofty reputation in its own right. A multiple host of the British Amateur (Jose-Maria Olazabal won that event here), Formby is unique in the world of seaside links courses in that it is surrounded on three sides by forest, giving it a secluded feel somewhat unusual when compared with the wide-open courses normally sought out on British golf vacations. Add Formby to rounds at the Open sites in the area (perhaps with a fifth round at Southport & Ainsdale), and you can spend an entire week enjoying English links. |
