The
Eight Step Swing, breaking the golf swing
down to key positions. Although swing
positions have been taught for decades,
the 8 steps use an entirely new idea
of "parameters" or "corridors" It
is not about exact positions or a single
method. There are "ranges" among
top ball strikers.

is probably best known for his research
on the golf swing and his work on The
X Factor, which describes in detail,
body motions, body angles and body positions. The
Eight Step video is the all time best
selling video on The Golf Channel and
the all time #1 golf DVD in America.
Jim's "Eight
Step Swing" book was ranked by
Sports Illustrated as one of the top
golf instruction books of the 20th century
(ranked #11).
"The
Golf Swing: Ben Hogan" video has
won 6 major awards (3 Aurora awards in
2000 and 3 Telly awards in 2001) - the
most of any golf video in history.
Playing
Achievements:
Jim
qualified for all the major USGA events:
the US Junior, the US Amateur (4), the
US Open (2) and the US Senior Open over
a 35 year span.
Jim
made the cut at The Masters. Won the
Northwest Open. Won the Pacific Northwest
Amateur three times. Won the Pacific
Coast Am at Olympic in San Francisco.
Won the Westchester PGA. Runner-up in
the Metropolitan PGA. Won the National
Skins Game at PGA WEST with amateur partner
George Zahringer ($51,000) which was
seen on ESPN. Qualified for ten National
Club Pro Championships. Won the Metropolitan
Pro-Pro Championship two times. Shot "27" for
nine holes in a tournament and "63" to
set the course record. At one time he
had the course record on three of the
golf courses at Doral. Jim has won over
50 junior and amateur events including
the Washington State Junior two times.
Jim
played 203 holes in one day for Charity.
He had best round of the day "66" on
the Red Course at Doral.
Jim
received a 4 year full scholarship to
the University of Houston. He had the
low scoring average on the team his senior
year. He was an All American. He played
on teams that included John Mahaffey
(PGA Champion), Bruce Lietzke (US Senior
Open Champion), Bill Rogers (British
Open Champion ranked #1 in the world
in 1981), Fuzzy Zoeller (US Open Champion
and Masters Champion), Tom Jenkins, Keith
Fergus, Bobby Wadkins, Bruce Ashworth,
and Bobby Walzel. Jim played under legendary
coach Dave Williams (teams won 16 NCAA
Championships).
Jim
was inducted in to the Pacific Northwest
Hall of Fame in 2003.
Jim
is an Instruction Editor for Golf Digest
(since 1997) and instruction Editor and
Advisor for The Golf Channel since its' inception
in 1995. Jim appears regularly on The
Golf Channel Academy. He was Master Instructor
for Golf Magazine from 1990 - 1997
and was an Instruction Writer for Golf
Illustrated from 1985 - 1990. He
has appeared on the cover of national
magazines a dozen times.
The
Jim McLean Future Collegians World Tour
conducts junior events all across America.
There are over 60 national events scheduled
and sold out every year. It is currently
the second largest junior tour in America.
Jim
was in charge of and over saw the 1999
re-design and restoration project for
The Blue Monster golf course at Doral.
Over 120 bunkers, plus several greens,
were totally changed and 160 yards were
added to the course. Doral is ranked
as one of the very top courses in the
State of Florida.
Jim
has taught more than 100 PGA Tour, LPGA
and Senior PGA Tour players at McLean
facilities including: Dana Quigley, Hal
Sutton, Jane Geddes, Jim Dent, Brad Faxon,
Tom Kite, Sergio Garcia, Dale Douglass,
Lenny Mattiace, James McLean, Curtis
Strange, Bernhard Langer, Cristie Kerr,
Blaine McCallister, Ben Crenshaw, Jerry
Pate, Gary Player, Liselotte Neuman,
Peter Jacobsen and Steve Elkington.
He
has worked with George Zahringer since
1975 (2003 Walker Cup selection). George
was the winner of the 2002 US Mid Am,
runner up in 2001, and dominant player
in the Met Area for over 20 years.
Jim
worked with Kenny Bakst, 1997 US Mid
Am Champion. Kenny also qualified for
The Masters.
Jim
has worked extensively (at his facilities)
with seven junior golfers (Cristie Kerr,
Eric Compton, Tyler Leon, James Vargas,
Liz Janangelo, Webb Simpson, Jon Curran)
since 1996 that have reached the number
one rating in America. The Jim McLean
Golf Schools have produced a huge number
of top juniors who have received college
scholarships. The Weston Hills Golf Academy
has over 350 juniors in its junior program.
Of
the many Jim McLean trained instructors
there are ten Master Instructors who
have worked under Jim that have been
named to America's "Top 100
Instructors" list and twenty-two
on The Golf Digest top teacher list in
their state. More than a dozen former
McLean teachers have gone on to be Head
Professionals at various well known clubs
around the nation.
Jim
McLean has worked extensively with many
top teachers including Carl Welty, Jimmy
Ballard, Art Bell, Jackie Burke, Bill
Collins, Harry Cooper, Gardner Dickinson,
Ben Doyle, Jack Grout, Claude Harmon,
Craig Harmon, Dick Harmon, Carl Lohren,
Al Mengert, Joe Nichols, Johnny Revolta,
Paul Runyan, Bob Toski, Ken Venturi,
Bob Watson, Gary Wiren, Vinny Grillo,
Harry Umbinetti, Homer Kelly, Butch Harmon,
Manuel De La Torre and Ben Doyle.
Jim
has worked for 35 years on golf research
with Carl Welty (arguably the top golf
researcher in the world).
Jim
also works with Dr. Robert Neal, consultant
to the Australian Institute of Sport
Golf Program, who has his PhD in Biomechanics
from the University of Queensland, Australia.
Dr. Neal's specialty is Golf Biomechanics
and he works exclusively with Jim McLean
Golf Schools.
