With legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus as his idol, Fred began playing golf at the age of 10 and liked it better than any other sport. By 14, Fred knew he wanted to play on the PGA TOUR. As a young man, Fred not only graduated from the University of Maryland, he served as golf coach for his alma mater from 1982 through 1988. It was during this time that his dream of playing on the PGA Tour suffered a setback when he tore his rotator cuff in 1987. With determination, he succeeded at Qualifying School the following year and proceeded to record three top-10 finishes in 1990. He won his first tournament at the 1992 Shell Houston Open.
Fred has led the PGA TOUR in driving accuracy for several years and currently leads this category with a 79.3 percent. He is one of the busiest players on the tour with at least 30 starts each year.
A Five-time PGA TOUR winner, Fred's victories include the Ideon Classic at pleasant Valley and Buick Challenge, the B.C. Open and the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic.
Among his top-ten finishes are the PGA Championship (T4), Valero Texas Open (T2), World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational (T2), Touchstone Energy Tucson Open (T4) and the Nissan Open (T9).
