As a member of the 1976 National Collegiate Championship team at Furman University, King was the low amateur at the 1976 U.S. Women's Open. She joined the LPGA tour in 1977 but did not have her first victory until the 1984 Women's Kemper Open. It was that same year that she also gained the title of Rolex Player of the Year. King won 20 tournament titles between 1984 and 1989 which gave her the most wins of any professional golfer during that time.
Betsy became the first LPGA player to record four rounds in the 60s in a major championship and in 1995 she became the first player in LPGA history to cross the $5 million mark. Betsy eventually went on to be named the Golf Writer's Association of America's 1989 Female Player of the Year and in 1995 she was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Today Betsy is active in the LPGA Christian Fellowship Group and serves on the National Board of Trustees for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
